In the 1980’s the love affair with the work of Stephen King could not be denied. Producers from every studio snatched up the rights for any story with his name attached to it. It was in this wave of consumption that New World Pictures acquired the rights to a short story of kings that he wrote a treatment for. The treatment was altered and director Fritz Kiersch was brought on to take a minimal budget and create a massive success that would spawn nearly a dozen sequels.
